Our Songs: The Practice of Stillness

My practice is a meditative dialogue born from stillness. Since moving into lyrical abstraction in 2022, I have sought colors that emerge only in quietude. Each canvas in the ongoing ‘Our Songs’ series begins with text—a passage written directly onto the raw surface, then submerged beneath accumulating layers of paint. These words remain unseen but materially present, shaping the work much like a bassline defines a song. Trained in Korean painting (BFA, MFA, PhD, Ewha Womans University), I integrate the sensibility of East Asian materials and mark-making with the Western canvas. These paintings do not merely depict comfort; they are constructed to offer it. Oseong Lee (b. 1980) lives and works in Seoul. She has held fifteen solo exhibitions across Korea and France, including the Kumho Museum of Art in Seoul and Galerie 89 in Paris. The ‘Our Songs’ series has been her primary focus since 2016.
